Steelhead Fishing Guide on the Famous Salmon River in New York State

Driftboat and Streamside Wading Fishing Trips

The most popular fishing season on rivers of New York, especially the Salmon River in Pulaski NY, is the Steelhead season. It starts in Mid October and runs through early May.

Steelhead fishing is the epitome of freshwater trout fishing. These acrobatic steelhead trout  "battle to the end" steelhead are the hardest fighting freshwater species on the planet.

As with the Salmon, Steelhead can be caught by many methods. My favorite is drift fishing, from my heated Driftboat or "bottom bouncing" with egg sacs or flies with fly rods or spinning rods.  Fishing with light line is what makes Steelhead fishing exciting and challenging.

Steelhead average 8-12 lbs. with many weighing in the 12-18 lb range. We've even seen some 20 pounders!
